Stockton Receives NFHCA Academic Honors

The 2006 season was a transition year in the lifespan of the Stockton field hockey team. The program bid farewell to its first four-year letter winners, seven seniors who comprised Stockton’s first field hockey recruiting class. In addition to the veteran presence, a number of freshmen and sophomores who represent the Ospreys’ future played key roles during the season. The result was a 7-11 overall record against difficult competition including six ranked opponents. Stockton also finished fifth in the NJAC with a 2-4 league record.

Senior goalkeeper Caitlin Nolan led the NJAC with 167 saves and also posted four shutouts to head the list of Stockton seniors. Senior Alison Capelli led the Ospreys in all three scoring categories with seven goals and four assists for 18 points. Aimee Rendine, also a part of the team’s core of four-year letter winners, tallied four goals and one assist for nine points, the exact same statistics as junior Sarah Duckett. Senior Kristen Woodrow notched seven points during the season and concluded a four-year stint in which she started every game.

The play of several young Stockton players provided a glimpse of the team’s bright future. Sophomore midfielder Samantha Horner and sophomore back Dana Meyers each were NJAC All-Conference Honorable Mention selections. Freshman Jackie Turner started 16 games and scored seven points on three goals and an assist. Freshmen Elizabeth Quinn and Gillian Terreri started 14 and 13 games respectively.

Stockton began the season with a 2-1 win over Manhattanville and later posted back-to-back 1-0 wins over Stevens and Ramapo to stand at 4-3 after seven games. After a pair of losses, the Ospreys bounced back with a season-high three-game winning streak in which they posted two shutouts and outscored their opponents by a combined 9-1 count. Stockton faced some of the nation’s top teams down the stretch and dropped its last six games, including four against ranked opponents, to finish at 7-11 on the season.

Kristen Woodrow was named to the NJAC All-Conference First Team while Caitlin Nolan, Samantha Horner and Dana Meyers were chosen as NJAC Honorable Mention players. Nolan earned her second career NJAC all-conference nod. Nolan was selected the NJAC Defensive Player of the Week three times during the season. Alison Capelli was named the NJAC Offensive Player of the Week once and Jackie Turner collected one NJAC Rookie of the Week honor.
