HEAD COACH GERRY MATTHEWS REACHES 400-WIN MILESTONE |
||||
Richard
Stockton College head men’s basketball coach Gerry Matthews collected
his 400th career victory at Stockton with an 80-50 win over Rutgers-Camden
last night. Matthews’ record now stands at 400-176 in his 21st season
on the Ospreys’ bench. He became the 32nd active NCAA Division III
coach to reach the 400-victory milestone. Matthews also ranks 23rd among
active Division III coaches with a .694 winning percentage.
Matthews, whose team improved to 14-7 with yesterday’s victory, is the 51st Division III coach all-time to win 400 games. Among NJAC coaches, Matthews trails only current New Jersey City mentor Charles Brown who has 477 wins in 25 seasons and Ollie Gelston who won 429 games at New Jersey City (1960-67) and Montclair State (1968-91). Matthews has won four NJAC championships (1986, ’87, ’96, ’97) and been named the NJAC Coach of the Year seven times (1987, ’88, ’92, ’93, ’96, ’00 ’02). He has led Stockton to 10 NCAA Tournament appearances including a trip to the Division III Final Four in 1987. Matthews’ teams have reached the 20-win mark 10 times and he has never had a losing season. Prior to his hiring at Stockton in 1985, Matthews went 228-98 and won two state titles in 13 years at Long Branch and Rumson-Fair Haven high schools. Gerry Matthews
