Head
Coach: Val Julien
Val Julien’s commitment to the sport of softball in general and
the Stockton program in particular cannot be understated. Earlier this
year, Julien was elected to the New Jersey ASA Hall of Fame for her significant
contributions to the sport. She continues to be the driving force behind
the Stockton softball program as she enters her 21st season as its head
coach.
Julien has brought
the Ospreys to new heights with three 20-win seasons and three ECAC tournament
berths in the past four years. As part of a 23-win campaign last season,
Julien earned her 300th career victory on April 1, 2006 as Stockton defeated
New Jersey City 14-2. The Ospreys eventually made their second consecutive
ECAC playoff appearance and fifth with Julien at the helm.
Julien led Stockton
to a school-record 25 wins in 2005, finishing with a 25-15 overall record.
Under her direction, Stockton went 18-15-1 during a 2004 campaign that
included a second consecutive 9-9 mark in the difficult NJAC. In 2003,
Julien led the Ospreys to 23 victories, a school record at the time, and
their first ECAC tournament berth since 1997. The nine-win improvement
over the previous year began the program’s current upswing after
sub-.500 seasons in 2001 and 2002. Julien collected her 200th victory
on March 13, 2001 as the Ospreys blanked Carroll (Wis.) 4-0.
Stockton posted its
first 20-win season and fourth straight winning record under Julien in
2000. The Ospreys also dominated the NJAC Blue Division from 1997-2000,
winning the division with an 8-0 record for three straight years and sharing
the division title with a 6-2 mark in 2000. Julien garnered her third
NJAC Blue Division Coach of the Year honor in five years following the
1999 season.
Julien was elevated
to the head coach position in 1987 after serving three years as an assistant
coach at Stockton under Dot Hirschfeld. She posted her first winning season
at Stockton in 1990 when she led her squad to a 19-15 mark and a third-place
finish in the ECAC tournament.
In addition to her
lengthy coaching stint at Stockton, Julien also has been active for many
years on the ASA level. She served as an assistant coach for the New Jersey
Divas ASA Women’s 23 & Under fastpitch national championship
team in 2003 as well as numerous Divas teams that won regional and state
championships.
