Head Coach: Phil Birnbaum
Phil Birnbaum, the only head coach in the history of the Stockton women’s tennis program, returns for his sixth season. He is one of the most knowledgeable and successful tennis coaches in New Jersey, and he boasts a wealth of experience. With those credentials, Birnbaum has quickly built the Stockton program into a success.

Under Birnbaum, Stockton saw its win total increase in each of its four seasons. Last year, the Ospreys went 6-2 in a rain-plagued season. Birnbaum led the Ospreys to their best record in 2004 with an 11-1 final mark and a third consecutive second-place finish in the NJAC. Stockton is 15-5 in league matches over the last four years, with four of the losses coming to perennial conference champ College of New Jersey.

The Ospreys posted a 9-1 record in 2003 and Birnbaum was rewarded with NJAC Coach of the Year and USPTA Middle States Coach of the Year honors. That came on the heels of a 2002 campaign in which Stockton went 7-2 overall and finished tied for second place in its first year of NJAC competition. Birnbaum also guided the Ospreys to a 5-5 mark in their inaugural season of 2001.

Birnbaum created the boys tennis program at Ocean City High School in 1970 and later took over the OCHS girls tennis program in 1986. During his tenure, he won over 650 matches, more than 20 league or division titles and eight South Jersey sectional championships. In addition to his success at the high school level, Birnbaum has been the head professional and tennis director for the City of Ocean City for twenty-eight years and has built one of the largest community tennis programs on the East Coast.

Assistant Coach:
Steve Riley
Steve Riley has been the assistant women’s tennis coach at Stockton since the program’s inception in 2001 and he returns for his sixth season in that role. Riley coached basketball and tennis at Lower Cape May High School over a 20-year span. He started the boys tennis program at Lower Cape May and won seven Cape Atlantic League championships. A former basketball player at Murray State, Riley remains active as a tennis player and has served as the captain of the Middle States 35-45 Inter-District Team.
