FUTURE WORK
A Velmex tree ring machine
will be used to carefully measure each individual ring on the cross sections.
From these data we hope to cross date the samples to sharpen our age estimates
and the relationship of the cross sections to each other chronologically. We
have already gone back to the site to find more downed logs that don't show any
signs of being cut. This new material is being sanded and prepared for analyses.
One of the logs found was over 40 feet long; we took cross sections from this
log at 10 foot intervals to help us understand height growth (stem analysis).
We may in the future visit other white-cedar stump fields in the
Meadowlands area to collect more cross sections to develop a chronology.
