Course Description:

This course will begin with a review of key physical therapy documents that supply the foundation for ethical practice by physical therapy professionals: the APTA Code of Ethics, Guide for Professional Conduct, Core Professional Values, and the Model Practice Act. Common challenges to ethical practice in today's complex health care environment will then be discussed through presentation and discussion of situation/case analysis utilizing the Realm-Internal Process-Situation Model (RIPS) as well as the Quadripartite Ethical Tool (QET). Select challenges to ethical practice to be discussed will include common business practices of concern including professional autonomy professional conduct and patients' rights and welfare.

Objectives: 

By the conclusion of this seminar, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the professional core values and their relationship to the APTA Code of Ethics .
  2. Identify common ethical concerns found in physical therapy practice.
  3. Appreciate a new approach to ethics in physical therapy practice using the Quadripatite Tool.
  4. Analyze ethical cases involving clinical practice using the RIPS Model.
  5. Evaluate ethical decision-making regarding clinical practice cases, and
  6. Determine their optimal resolution incorporating ethics.
