Working with Clients Who Stutter: Functional Outcomes

Wednesday, October 17, 2018

Wednesday, October 17th Dinner begins at 4:45pm (N-Wing), Program time: 6:00 pm-8:00 pm

Course Description:

Joseph Sheehan first introduced the image of an iceberg as a model of stuttering in 1970. The model provides a visual representation of how the observable behaviors of stuttering are just the “tip of the iceberg”. The larger, hidden part of the iceberg involves thoughts and feelings about talking and stuttering. Although this model has been referenced for almost 50 years, clinicians often continue to focus primarily on the behavioral components of stuttering with less than successful outcomes.

This workshop will explain how clinicians can utilize a holistic approach to therapy which includes the affective, behavioral, and cognitive aspects for people who stutter.  This session will present tools to assist in identifying therapy targets leading to functional outcomes. Writing goals and objectives that lead to functional outcomes will also be discussed. In addition, the session will discuss the importance of educating communication partners about the nature of stuttering and what successful outcomes for therapy might entail.

Objectives: At the end of this course, participants will:

  1. Identify 3 tools that can be used in identifying therapy targets in people who stutter (PWS).
  2. Develop goals and objectives that lead to functional outcomes in PWS.
  3. Explain the nature of stuttering to other professionals as well as significant others of PWS.
