The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research (YIVO) and Stockton University are pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition, After the End of the World: Displaced Persons and Displaced Persons Camps. The exhibit was created by the United Nations Department of Global Communications, United Nations Archives and YIVO. Professor Debórah Dwork, Center for the Study of the Holocaust, Genocide, and Crimes Against Humanity at the Graduate Center—CUNY, served as the scholar adviser for the exhibition. The exhibition was designed by YIVO and sponsored by the Refugee Studies Initiative and the Sara and Sam Schoffer Holocaust Resource Center at Stockton University.

An unprecedented humanitarian crisis unfolded after the Second World War. The exhibition examines the responses of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA), the first multinational response of its kind, and of Jewish Holocaust survivors in the immediate post-war years.

The exhibition is on view from March 21 to April 28, 2022 at the Richard E. Bjork Library at Stockton University. The exhibition is open to the public, free of charge, and open seven (7) days a week.

Sergeant Leon Bass During World War II in Nazi-Occupied Europe

Please join us for a Zoom presentation next week in honor of Black History Month at Stockton University, Sergeant Leon Bass During World War II in Nazi-Occupied Europe. The presentation will focus on the life story of Dr. Leon Bass. Dr. Leon Bass joined the U.S. Army during World War II and was a liberator of the Buchenwald concentration camp. As an 18 year old African American soldier, he encountered the brutal realities of racism in the United States Armed Forces. Decades later, Dr. Bass used his experiences to teach high school students about the consequences of racism.

18 Voices: A Liberation Day Reading Of Young Writers’ Diaries From The Holocaust

More than one million Jewish children were killed during the Holocaust and countless others survived. Some, like Anne Frank, kept diaries in which they confided their hopes, fears, and experiences. This illustrated lecture will show the latest findings of the “Mapping Hiding Places Research Project,” including Stockton University student research. This historical project presents findings on where and how Jews in Nazi-occupied Europe found hiding places. All can share and contribute knowledge about this topic in Holocaust Studies.

"Hoy Por Ti, Manana Por Mi (Today For You, Tomorrow For Me): Mexico During & After World War II"

This presentation will focus on the role of Mexico before and after World
War II and the story of Gilberto Bosques Saldivar (1892-1995), who served as the Mexican Consul General in Marseille, France between 1939 and 1943. As the Consul General, Bosques issued tens of thousands of visas for Spanish and Jewish refugees who wanted to escape from Nazi-occupied Europe.

On Monday, August 17th - Thursday, August 20, 2020, Yad Vashem, The Sam Azeez Museum of Woodbine Heritage, the Sara and Sam Schoffer Holocaust Resource Center at Stockton University, and Echoes & Reflections will present the 3rd Annual Wally and Lutz Hammerschlag Summer Educator Seminar, "In the Age of Digital Learning: Teaching about the Holocaust through Art, Photograhy, Literature, Film, and more." The cost is free for educators. This seminar will teach about the history of the Holocaust by using the arts to connect with the past to make a better future for all. Strategies and resources will be shared.

Father's Day 2020 Recipes from Holocaust Survivors Settled in South Jersey Communities in Atlantic and Cape May Counties

As we celebrate Father’s Day, we can lovingly look back and remember our dads (sometimes moms) preparing special recipes that they brought from their childhoods into their own kitchens. After WWII, as Holocaust survivors settled in South Jersey communities in Atlantic and Cape May Counties, some of these recipes were brought from Europe into their kitchens in South Jersey. For Father’s Day 2020, the staff of the Sara and Sam Schoffer Holocaust Resource Center at Stockton University are sharing stories and recipes of some of our local Holocaust survivors.

Online Lecture and Zoom session: "Self-Help During the Armenian Genocide: Recovering Refugee Voices," presented by post-doctoral Fellow in Holocaust and Genocide studies at Stockton University, Dr. Asya Darbinyan

In commemoration of the 105th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, the Master of Arts in Holocaust and Genocide Studies Program, Hughes Center for Public Policy, and Sara and Sam Schoffer Holocaust Resource Center present an evening of Armenian culture and remembrance. Dr. Asya Darbinyan, Post-Doctoral Fellow of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Stockton University, will present a lecture entitled “Self-Help during the Armenian Genocide: Recovering Refugee Voices.”
