Stockton Athletics Inducts 2023 Hall of Fame Class

Stockton Athletics inducted its 2023 Hall of Fame class at a banquet held on Oct. 6 in the Campus Center Event Room of the Galloway campus. The inductees included Nick Bologno '15 (men's lacrosse), Jared Lewis '18 (men's track & field), Sasha Williams '18 (women's basketball) and the 1985 Softball Team.

After Bologno, Lewis and Williams were inducted, the evening concluded with the induction of the 1985 Softball Team, which won the ECAC championship to earn the first postseason title of any kind by any Stockton team. Val Julien, who was an assistant coach in 1985 and later served as head softball coach for 29 years, spoke first and then brought first baseman Abby Roessler to the stage to speak on behalf of the team.

Roessler called it "surreal" that team members could be together 38 years later and said of the 1985 season, "We had the time of our lives." Roessler was one of 10 players from the squad who were in attendance as well as three siblings of the late Chris "Scrapper" Ross, the team captain who Roessler called "the heart and soul of our team."


Stockton Cruises to Sweep of NJCU

The Stockton volleyball team cruised to a 25-18, 25-18, 25-12 sweep of New Jersey City for its seventh in eight matches Sept. 28. All 16 healthy Ospreys saw action in the victory.

Camille De La Torre and Nicole Palmer led Stockton with seven kills apiece followed by Rileigh Wilson with five kills.

Regan Mendick chipped in with nine assists and six digs while freshman Kristen Burton tallied nine assists, five digs and a career-high four aces. McKenna Ritchie tied for match-high honors with eight digs.

De La Torre, Wilson and Palmer registered three kills apiece as Stockton took the first set 25-18. Four more kills by Palmer sparked the Ospreys to another 25-18 win in the second set. Emma Capriglione spiked four kills as Stockton dominated the third stanza 25-12 to clinch the victory.


120 Ospreys Qualify for NJAC All-Academic Team

A total of 120 Stockton student-athletes qualified for the 2022-23 New Jersey Athletic Conference All-Academic Team for their work in the classroom. Track & field competitor Max Klenk and two-sport athlete Brynn Bowman of the women's tennis and golf teams collected NJAC All-Academic First Team recognition.

Track & field competitor Mike Carfagno was an NJAC All-Academic Second Team selection for the second straight year. Women's lacrosse player Kerstin Axe joined Carfagno on the NJAC All-Academic Second Team. In addition to Bowman, Klenk, Carfagno and Axe, 116 Ospreys snagged NJAC All-Academic Honorable Mention spots.

To be eligible, student-athletes must be sophomores, juniors or seniors in a conference-sponsored sport that have a minimum 3.20 grade point average and are not first-year transfers. Stockton is an NJAC member in 16 of its 19 sports, all except men's lacrosse, women's golf and women's rowing.


Six Rowers Qualify for CRCA Scholar Athlete Awards 

Six members of the Stockton women's rowing team qualified for 2023 CRCA Scholar Athlete status from the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association. Izabelle DelRoss, the lone senior on the team, qualified along with five juniors.

Jordan Barikian, Amber Hartzell, Emily Latshaw, Kelley Mason and Madelynn Schina joined DelRoss as Stockton's CRCA Scholar Athletes. The six Ospreys were among over 1,000 honorees from 111 institutions in all three NCAA Divisions.

To qualify, rowers must have been in at least their second year of eligibility, posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher and rowed in an NCAA-eligible boat for a minimum 75 percent of the team's spring races or rowed in a conference championship or the NCAA Championship.

Stockton Sets Three School Records at AARTFC Championships 

Stockton University set three school records to highlight its performance at the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Championships last May. The Ospreys finished 13th out of 47 women's teams and tied for 23rd out of 43 men's teams at the two-day meet, which was held at Susquehanna University.

The women's 4x800 relay team won and set a school record (9:30.79) with a trio of freshmen in Kayla Kass, Gabriella Collins and Rachel Hayes, plus senior Lauren Maldonado. The quartet knocked four seconds off the previous mark that stood for seven years.

Erik Ackerman was the top finisher for the Stockton men's team with a school record in the 1500m (3:53.94) that was good for third place.

Carson Latham, Ryan Fisher, Dontay Turner and freshman Anthony Gentile set a school record and finished fifth in the 4x100 relay (41.85 seconds).


Swedlund Named USILA All-America Honorable Mention for Fourth Time

Stockton graduate student Luc Swedlund was named USILA All-America Honorable Mention by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association for the third straight year and fourth time in his career.

Swedlund, who played four full seasons (2018-19, 2022-23) plus two COVID-shortened seasons (six games in 2020, nine games in 2021), became the first four-time USILA All-America honoree in the program's 37-year history. He was chosen USILA All-America Honorable Mention in 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023.

Swedlund finished his career with school records of 354 goals and 427 points in 90 games as an Osprey. He ranks third in NCAA Division III history in goals and sixth in points as well as tied for ninth in goals per game (3.93). Swedlund led the nation with 100 goals in 2019 and stands as one of just three Division III players ever to hit the century mark in a season.


Eight Ospreys Earn CSC Academic All-District Recognition

Eight Stockton student-athletes earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Track & Field/Cross Country honors for 2022-23. All eight registered cumulative grade point averages of 3.65 or higher.

Shahyan Abraham, Kierstin Clem, Olivia Harris, Jessie Klenk and Lauren Maldonado were Stockton's CSC Academic All-District Women's Track & Field/Cross Country selections.

Mike Carfagno, Max Klenk and Cooper Knorr were CSC Academic All-District Men's Track & Field/Cross Country honorees for Stockton.


Axe Voted to CSC Academic All-America Third Team

Stockton senior Kerstin Axe was voted to the NCAA Division III Academic All-America Women's At-Large Third Team, which is selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC). Axe, a member of the Stockton women's lacrosse team, graduated from Stockton in May with a perfect 4.0 grade point average as a marine science major.

Axe became Stockton's 19th Academic All-American. Her selection marked four straight years and seven of the last eight with at least one Academic All-American for Stockton.

The Academic All-America Teams are selected by college athletic communications professionals. The women's at-large category encompasses multiple sports including lacrosse, field hockey, gymnastics, golf and ice hockey.


Baseball Team Earns ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award

The baseball team qualified for an ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award from the American Baseball Coaches Association for the 2022-23 academic year. Nearly 800 teams from high schools, junior colleges and four-year institutions were acknowledged by the ABCA.

The recognition goes to programs coached by ABCA members that posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above for the entire 2022-23 academic year. Stockton was one of 162 NCAA Division III teams that qualified for the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award this year.

On the field, the Ospreys won 22 games, just one shy of the school record. They qualified for the NJAC Tournament by finishing in the top six of the league standings for the first time since 2013 (excluding 2020-21 due to COVID) with a young roster that included 14 freshmen and 13 sophomores.
