Mae Gant - Choose Stockton
Mae Gant
Class of 2026Hometown: Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey
Why did you choose Stockton?
After initially attending another university to study Nursing, I left after my first year unsure about what I wanted to do as a career. I took time off from school to join a national volunteer service program called AmeriCorps NCCC, and upon returning home, I decided I wanted to go back to school. Being close to home, Stockton felt like a familiar and safe place for me to explore my studies and clarify what I wanted to get out of my college experience.
How did you choose your major?
When transferring to Stockton, I decided on Sociology & Anthropology because I was interested in working in nonprofit management. In my first semester, I took an Archaeological Field Methods course, which lit my spark in this area of the field instead. After another semester of courses, I set my concentration as Archaeology. Later, I added a Philosophy & Religion minor after taking a general course called “In the Animal’s Image,” which was a Philosophy course about animal consciousness that left me wanting to learn more.
What opportunities has Stockton provided you?
Stockton has created a container in which my curiosity and wonder could guide my studies at a pace that felt comfortable for me. It has given me the opportunity to explore my interests and follow where they take me. As a transfer student, I have never felt rushed here to decide my major, concentration or minor, but rather have been able to take my time exploring different areas. I also have found that all my professors genuinely care about my wellbeing and want to see me succeed.
I am involved in undergraduate archaeology research with Dr. Bobbi Hornbeck studying Aleutian midden material as well as indigenous lithic tools from the Cape May, New Jersey, region. I was also able to study abroad in Albania at an archaeological field school for five weeks in the summer. Outside of Stockton, I am a yoga teacher and have had opportunities to lead clubs at Stockton through yoga classes.
What advice do you have for students thinking about attending Stockton?
At Stockton you will have the opportunity to explore your curiosities about the world around you, your perspectives and insights will be valued, and you will be supported by your professors. I would also highly recommend taking classes outside of your comfort zone, like I did with archaeology, as you may find a new spark within.
