Periodic Program Review
The Periodic Program Reivew is a comprehensive and systematic review of academic programs, centers, institutes, and offices within Academic Affairs. This framework is designed to support continuous improvement, institutional accountability, and strategic alignment in accordance with the University’s mission, values, and strategic priorities.
Review Types and Processes
Degree-Granting Academic Programs
All degree-granting programs undergo a comprehensive Periodic Program Review (PPR) on a six-year cycle. These reviews include:
A full self-study addressing student learning outcomes assessment, enrollment and student success data, curriculum, teaching, sustainability, resources, and strategic alignment
Analysis of progress on prior program goals and alignment with institutional strategic priorities
An external consultant review and report
Formal written responses from the program and the Dean
A university-level goal-setting meeting
Multi-year goals tracked through annual reporting
This process is designed to support program quality, student learning improvement, strategic planning, and institutional accountability.
Accredited Academic Programs
Accredited programs complete an internal periodic review at the midpoint of their accreditation cycle. These reviews include:
A self-study addressing student learning outcomes assessment, enrollment and student success data, curriculum, teaching, sustainability, resources, and strategic alignment
Analysis of progress on prior program goals and alignment with institutional strategic priorities
An internal review process (no external consultant)
A university-level goal-setting meeting
Multi-year goals tracked through annual reporting
This approach preserves institutional consistency and rigor across all degree-granting programs, avoids duplication of effort, and supports continuous improvement while also providing accredited programs with a structured, evidence-based mechanism for identifying strengths and gaps relevant to future reaccreditation planning.
Minors and Other Academic Offerings
Minors and other academic offerings (e.g., FRST, QUAD, Honors, First-Year Seminars, General Education, LIBA, Writing) undergo an internal periodic review on a six-year cycle. These reviews focus on:
Purpose and role in the curriculum
Enrollment trends and student demand
Contribution to student learning and success
Strategic alignment and sustainability
Assessment practices and improvement efforts
These reviews culminate in a goal-setting process and multi-year goals tracked through annual reporting
Externally Facing Centers and Institutes
Externally facing centers and institutes- defined as units that engage external constituencies, generate revenue, deliver public programming, or represent the University to external partners- undergo an Internal Effectiveness and Strategic Alignment Review on a six-year cycle.
These reviews focus on:
Mission and strategic alignment
External impact and regional purpose
Financial sustainability and stewardship
Risk management and compliance
Use of data for improvement
Strategic positioning and future directions
These reviews are improvement-oriented, do not involve external reviewers, and are not intended as compliance or performance audits. All reviews culminate in a goal-setting meeting and the establishment of multi-year goals tracked through annual reporting.
Offices and Internally Facing Centers
Offices and internally facing centers- defined as units whose primary function is to support internal academic operations, faculty, programs, or students- undergo an Internal Effectiveness and Strategic Alignment Review on a six-year cycle.
These reviews focus on:
Mission and strategic alignment
Service impact and effectiveness
Operational effectiveness and sustainability
Staffing, workload, and resource adequacy
Use of data for improvement and continuous planning
These reviews are improvement-oriented, do not involve external reviewers, and are not intended as compliance or performance audits. All reviews culminate in a goal-setting meeting and the establishment of multi-year goals tracked through annual reporting.
