WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT
$2.44M Grant to Expand Access, Research at Marine Facilities
Stockton has received a $2.44 million grant to make critical infrastructure improvements to its Marine Field Station and Coastal Research Center, expanding research and educational programming, while improving accessibility for those with disabilities.
“This project will create a strategically located working waterfront to support coastal science in Atlantic and Ocean counties by providing improved and accessible facilities for use by Stockton University and its many state, federal and educational partners,” said Steve Evert, director of the Marine Field Station.
The Marine Field Station is the university’s hub for connecting and supporting faculty from Marine Science, Environmental Science, Geology, Biology, Chemistry and Coastal Zone Management programs.
The improvements, funded by a $2,440,760 grant from the Pro-NJ Trust, will focus on the field station’s marina area along Nacote Creek. The station currently has a habitat-degraded lagoon, shoreline erosion issues and a boat ramp that can no longer be used, Evert said.
Stockton Opens New Doors to Global Learning
A Stockton University education is designed to help students see beyond the boundaries of a classroom, a campus and, increasingly, a country.
Through new partnerships with universities around the world and programs that bring international perspectives directly into Stockton classrooms, students are gaining opportunities to work across cultures, encounter different ways of thinking and better understand their place in an interconnected world. And they don’t necessarily have to study abroad to do it.
“I want to integrate policies, programs, initiatives and individuals to make Stockton more globally oriented and internationally connected,” said Patty Sagasti Suppes, the university’s director of Global Engagement, directly citing the definition of “internationalization” from the American Council on Education. “I want to see us embed much more internationalization in our curriculum and in the campus life.”
That effort is expanding what a Stockton education can offer students, whether they spend a semester in another country, participate in a shorter faculty-led program or collaborate from Galloway with students thousands of miles away.
FRAME-WORTHY
Picture Stockton…working with oyster farmers for conservation
Christine Thompson, associate professor of Marine Science, and her students pulled a seine net along rows of oyster cages while the farmers on the lease tended to their oysters.
Kristin Adams ‘17, a conservation specialist for the Ocean County Soil Conservation District, connected the commercial oyster farmers with the marine science team through a grant-funded project that pays farmers to foster baby oysters that will later be planted on Stockton Uniersity’s oyster reef restoration sites in Barnegat Bay.
Oysters are the bay’s natural filters and provide habitat to juvenile fish and crabs that seek shelter in the reef structure.
The R/V Rudy Arndt left the dock just after sunrise to work with the tides.
Adams joined Thompson and her students to help survey fish and crab species living on and outside oyster lease sites with fish traps and a seine net and gathered water quality samples and data.

SCOSA Receives Grant for Caregiver Support
The Stockton Center on Successful Aging (SCOSA) received a $2,500 grant from the Mosaic Foundation to support its Caregiver Support Program.
The funding will help strengthen SCOSA’s weekly caregiver support groups and quarterly grief support groups, which provide caregivers and families with supportive spaces to connect, share experiences and access helpful resources.
Through the caregiver support groups, participants can learn practical caregiving strategies, receive emotional support from peers facing similar challenges and build connections that can help reduce isolation. The quarterly grief support groups offer guidance and support for individuals coping with the loss of a loved one.
“Caregiving can be both rewarding and challenging, and having a community of support is essential,” said SCOSA Director Christine Ferri. “We are grateful to the Mosaic Foundation for investing in our mission and helping us continue to provide meaningful programs that promote resilience, healing and connection for caregivers and families.”
The Mosaic Foundation supports programs that strengthen care, connection and quality of life for older adults, caregivers and families in the community.
