Your participation in the ceremony is voluntary. All graduates who plan to attend the Commencement Ceremony must attend Grad Finale on April 20 Or 21, 2020. More information can be found under the Important Dates link. There is no rehearsal for Commencement.

Doors to Boardwalk Hall will open at 10:00am for Guests and Graduates. Graduates will enter through West Hall on the boardwalk.  Family members and guests will be directed to enter through the main entrance to Boardwalk Hall from the boardwalk.

Do not forget your guest tickets and regalia (cap, gown, hood, and tassel). Guests cannot enter the building without presenting a ticket at the Boardwalk Hall main entrance.

Please choose an after ceremony meet up point with your party before entering the building as cell phone reception is limited inside the building.

Graduate check-in will take place in West Hall at Boardwalk Hall. Lines will be arranged in alphabetical order by last name. You will receive your name reader card when you check in. This card should be safeguarded as it will be used to read your name as you cross the stage as well as display your name on the screens in Boardwalk Hall.

After checking in and receiving your name reader card graduates will be directed to their line-up location. Line-up locations will be determined by their school and major. Only very limited special needs seating will be available in this area so please wear sensible shoes. Secure storage will not be available so graduates should not bring anything with them that they do not plan to have with them throughout the ceremony.

Graduates should use this time to use the restrooms as the ceremony will be 2.5 to 3 hours long. If the graduate’s name is difficult to pronounce they should also use this time write out the phonetic spelling in the blank line shown on the card.

The procession will start from the line up areas promptly at 11:55am. Four lines will be processing at the same time. Graduates should make sure to follow the individual in front of them to maintain the correct line order. Commencement programs will be on the graduate’s seat in the arena.

As graduates cross the stage, a photo will be taken twice, once shaking their Dean’s hand and then again in front of a green screen upon exiting the stage. Proofs of these photos will automatically be mailed and emailed to the graduate in the week following the ceremony.

Two lines of students will be processing simultaneously across the stage. Prior to proceeding up the side ramp, graduates will receive their diploma cover. The diploma should be in the graduate’s left hand and the name reader card in their right hand. Graduates will then proceed up the ADA ramps and hand their name card to the reader. When directed, graduates will proceed across the stage to shake hands with their Dean. The first picture will be taken while the Dean and the graduate are shaking hands.

Graduates will then exit the platform by proceeding down the ADA ramp at center stage. The second photo will be taken at the bottom of the ramp, in front of a green screen. After the second photo is taken the graduates will be directed to return to their seat.

Once graduates have crossed the stage they are asked to please respect their fellow students and their experience of the ceremony by returning to their seat until the recessional.

The recessional will be led by the University Grand Marshal followed by the Platform Party and Faculty. The graduates will follow after. The ceremony is expected to be completed by 3:00pm.

After exiting Boardwalk Hall through West Hall graduates are encouraged to meet their families on Boardwalk. The picturesque environment will be ideal for family photos. Please note that cell phone reception is limited inside the building. It is recommended that you connect with your family and friends after you have exited the building. Graduates and guests are encouraged to dine at one of the many restaurants in the Atlantic City area.

Diplomas for all spring graduating students who complete all academic requirements and have no outstanding obligations to the University will receive their diploma  at the end of August. Diplomas for fall and summer graduates are mailed about 12 to 14 weeks after degree completion. If you have questions about your diploma, please call the Office of the Registrar at 609.652.4235 for more information.  The Bachelor's diploma size is 8.5' x 11".
