Assessing Learners with Complex Communication Needs: How to Evaluate Students Who Use AAC

Course Description:
In this course, participants will be introduced to the Communication Bill of Rights,
along with the work of Dr. Janice Light, detailing the
different communicative competencies. Methods for assessing the receptive and expressive
communication skills of students with complex communication needs (CCN) will be discussed,
along with ideas for modifying administration of standardized assessments. Particular
attention will be given to the Communication Matrix (Rowland) and the Dynamic AAC
Goals Grid-2 (Tobii Dynavox).
Considerations for conducting culturally and linguistically-responsive AAC assessments
will also be discussed, based largely on the work of Dr. Gloria Soto. Resources will
be shared for goal development.
Learner Outcomes : At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- List at least one way administration of standardized assessments could be modified for students who are non-verbal communicators
- List at least two different methods of assessing the expressive language skills of students with CCN
- List one consideration when assessing students who are bilingual and use AAC
