Meeting Minutes - Tuesday, November 11, 2025

FHS Monthly Meeting (ZOOM) Start Time: 6:35pm

Present:  Tula Christopoulos; Cathy Karathanasis; Mariea Kazantzis; Katherine Panagakos; Tom Papademetriou; Andrew Rafael; Luisa Spinella (for Exploring Hellenism discussion.)

October Minutes: Tula moved; Tom seconded. Approved.

Financial Report:  None.

Scholarship Updates: Katherine.

  • Katherine is discussing with Cindy Crager how a Hellenic Studies scholarship may affect a student’s financial aid status.
  • There was some discussion on the rules and policy for a student applying full-time vs. non-matriculated and registering for one class.

Pappas Hellenic Center Report:  Tom.

  • Tom accepted a $10,000 gift for Hellenic Studies from the Greek Consul General in NY.
  • Kanara introduced Tom to someone in a non NGO Study in Greece organization: Students study in Greece; can take pre-med, etc. at Greek universities.
  • Tom will share this information with the Office of Global Engagement.
  • Tom is reviewing the Constantelos book project to keep what is representative.
  • NYC trip cancelled. May reschedule in spring.
  • Katherine suggested a trip to renovated Princeton Museum.

  • Up to date.

Hellenic Voice: Mariea.

  • One week extended deadline to submit articles to Sarah.
  • Tom has two articles by Asia Minor Studies students.
  • Katherine will write a brief greeting in English; Mariea wrote one in Greek.
  • Tom will write a brief Director’s greeting.
  • Tom will write about the Consul General gift to Hellenic Studies.
  • Cathy and Mariea submitted articles.
  • Tula hopes to submit an article by next week.

Exploring Hellenism:

  • March 1st entire event will take place in the Campus Event Room noon to 8pm.
  • Food: heavy hors d’oeuvres reflecting the culture (Tula will discuss with Luisa).
  • Tom suggested having a tasting. Tula will ask Chartwells.
  • Katherine will give a 25 minute historical perspective.
  • Tula will ask Kathryn Mason to reserve March 1st date on President Joe’s calendar. Also, will ask if he’d like to play accordion at the event. Luisa asked the band; they agreed.
  • Provost Dr. Palladino will also be invited.
  • Lucio will be invited to give a greeting in Italian.
  • Luisa will invite the new Italian Consul General of Philadelphia
  • Luisa sent a link to recipes.
  • Tula will use the 2023 Pontian Spirit sponsorship request letter as a template for Magna Graecia sponsorship.
  • Iconic symbol representing the region was discussed. One that Cathy suggested will be submitted to Graphics to work with and create something unique to use on invitation, tickets ($50; students: $20), flyer.
  • Save the Date should be ready by December FHS meeting.
