Geoscience Organizations

The following is a list of some of the major geology societies.

The Geological Society of America is one of the oldest (1888) organizations and broadest in scope for all disciplines and levels of expertise.

The American Geophysical Union covers most of the disciplines of geology and has a very diverse member profile.

The Mineralogical Society of America is focused on the “hard rock” disciplines – mineralogy, crystallography, and petrology, and how they are used.

The Geochemical Society is interested at all aspects of geochemistry – from ocean and groundwater chemistry to magma and extraterrestrial chemistry.

The American Association of Petroleum Geologists is currently the world’s largest professional geological society. It is also has interest in the environmental aspects of petroleum geology.

The Society of Economic Geologists is focused on ore deposits of all kinds.

The Society for Sedimentary Geology is dedicated to most aspects of “soft rock” geology including sedimentology, stratigraphy, paleontology, and other disciplines.

The National Groundwater Association is interested in all aspects of groundwater hydrology.
