Prepare for Precepting & Registration

Purpose and Mission of Precepting

You receive two days off from classes each semester to meet with your Preceptor and plan your courses and academic goals for the upcoming semester.

Your Preceptor is a full-time Faculty member who will support you throughout your academic journey.

Together, you and your Preceptor will plan a program of study that reflects your interests and goals while supporting the broader values of a liberal arts education. These conversations are an opportunity for you to reflect on your progress, explore your goals, and take an active role in shaping your academic experience.

Spring 2026 Precepting Days are March 24 and April 1.

Juniors and Seniors typically meet their preceptors on Day 1, and Sophomores and First-Years on Day 2.

Registration for the Fall 2026 semester takes place March 24 through April 7, with registration times assigned based on the number of credits you have earned. Students with more completed credits register earliest.

Beginning April 8, registration will remain open for all students on a rolling basis through the start of the Fall semester.

Holds prevent registration!

Check if you have holds on your account in your Go Portal under "My Pre-Registration Time" and resolve them before your registration date. Common holds include Bursar, Financial Aid/SAP, Academic Probation. Contact the corresponding office to learn how to resolve your hold.

Helpful Tips to Prepare for Precepting and Registration

  1. Make an appointment with your Preceptor

You can identify who your Preceptor is by looking at your Degree Works. Click the envelope icon at the top right corner of Degree Works and you will be able to send them a quick email to schedule your appointment.

  2. Watch the Degree Works and Registration Tutorials

    Degree Works Tutorial

The Degree Works Audit is designed to show your progress and make sure you are fulfilling the necessary Degree Requirements.

Degree Works will show you which course requirements you have left to complete your degree.

    Course Registration Tutorial

The Course Registration Tutorials will show you how to browse and register for classes.

You will learn how to search with filters for the requirements you need such as attributes, major courses, general studies courses.

  3. Make a list of courses you are interested in

Make a list of 5-6 classes that you may be interested in taking. Present this list to your Preceptor and see how taking these courses will affect your progress.

    • Tip: If you are looking to fulfill a "G" course or Attribute Requirement, pick a few backups for these requirements, as popular courses fill fast!
    • Tip: Check for pre-requisites, co-requisites, and restrictions on each course to ensure you are eligible before adding them to your list.
  4. Check your registration time

Your registration time can be found in the Student Services Tab in your GoPortal > Student Services Tab > Student Tools > “My Pre-Registration Time.”

This is the time you can start registering. Be advised that your registration ends at midnight.

    • Note: Registration time is based on credits earned (not including in-progress courses) and cannot be changed.
    • Tip: During the spring semester, if you meet with your Preceptor and complete an evaluation of them, you can bump your time to the morning slot of your assigned day!

Drop-in Precepting in Academic Advising
Tuesday, March 24, 2026 | 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Location: The Center for Academic Advising | Campus Center 242

If you meet with your assigned Preceptor but still have additional questions, the Center for Academic Advising will have Advisors available on Precepting Day on a first-come, first-served basis from 10am - 4pm.

Advisors are professional staff (not faculty in your major) who can assist with Degree Works, general curriculum questions, forms, and connecting you with campus resources.

Please note that meeting with an Advisor does not qualify you for the Preceptor evaluation that can move up your registration time. Only meetings with your assigned Preceptor are eligible.
