Repeat Course Questions and Answers

A Stockton University transcript records all courses taken at Stockton University and the outcome (grades or withdrawals) of those courses. Students may repeat, for degree credit, courses bearing the same or equivalent course numbers, designated as repeatable for credit in the University’s Catalog of Courses

When does the new Procedures 2015 Repeat Course(s) begin?

This new procedure, Procedure 2015 Repeat Course(s), begins with the Fall 2023 term. Students who previously earned a grade of C- or lower may repeat the same or equivalent course in the Fall 2023 term.

Does the new Procedure 2015 Repeat Course also include Grade Replacement?

Yes. Students may repeat courses at any time. However, students may only replace their C- grades or lower with a repeat course grade. There is a five-course limit to grade replacement for undergraduate students.

If I earned a grade greater than C- does the grade replacement part of this procedure apply?

No, the new grade replacement procedure will only impact the first five undergraduate courses that a student retakes where the previously earned grade was a C- or below.

How do I repeat a course in which I earned a grade of C- or below?

The student must re-register, pay all appropriate tuition and fees, and satisfactorily complete the course (whereupon a separate grade will be assigned).

How will a repeated course impact my GPA?

All grades earned will remain on the student’s permanent transcript, but only the highest grade is calculated in the cumulative grade point average for the first five grade replacements.

Is there a limit to the number of courses for which a student can replace a grade?

The grade replacement part of this procedure will apply to the first five distinct courses for which the student reenrolls in a course, where the previous grade was a C- or below. If a student repeats a sixth (6) course, both grades (original and repeated) will remain on the student’s permanent transcript, and both will be calculated in the grade point average.

What happens if I repeat a course in which my previous grade was a C or better?

Both grades (original and repeat) will remain on the student’s permanent transcript, and both will be calculated in the grade point average. Except where specified in the University Bulletin, a course passed more than once may only be counted once toward graduation.

What about courses repeated prior to the Fall 2023 term? How are these calculated in my GPA?

Both grades (original and repeat) will remain on the student’s permanent transcript, and both will be calculated in the grade point average. Except where specified in the University Bulletin, a course passed more than once may only be counted once toward graduation.

Will all of my prior grades appear on my academic transcript?

Yes, all grades earned at Stockton University appear on a student’s academic transcript.

Will my repeated courses apply to my academic requirements (program/major/minor/degree requirements)?

Except where specified in the University Bulletin, a course passed more than once may only be counted once toward a student’s requirements for graduation.

Does this procedure apply to General Studies Courses?

Yes, this procedure applies to General Studies Courses provided the courses are identical. The course (s) must have the same acronym and course number (or equivalent course number) as the previously registered course.

Does this procedure apply to all students?

This procedure applies to undergraduate students. More stringent restrictions may be determined by individual programs to meet standards recommended by accrediting bodies, statutory regulations, and/or professional societies and must be stated in the University Bulletin, course catalog, or program handbook.

Graduate students should review their program policy and procedures handbook for additional details.

I graduated from Stockton University, and I want to raise my graduation GPA. Does this procedure apply?

Once a student graduates, if they reenroll, their graduation GPA will not be updated.

What if I am enrolled in a second degree after graduating? If I repeat a course, will the previous grade (C- or below) still count towards my new degree?

Once a course applies to a degree and that degree is conferred, those degree requirements will not be altered.

How many times can I repeat a single course?

The maximum attempts should be three, Courses which result in a withdrawal counts as an attempt. Students can register for a second attempt on their own, but if a third attempt is required, they will have to get permission from their school office before being allowed to register a third time.

Does this procedure apply to graduate students?

Graduate students should refer to the University Bulletin and  program handbook for details regarding grade replacement.

I am a dual degree student, does this procedure apply?

Students in accelerated undergraduate-graduate dual degree programs can cumulatively replace grades in a maximum of five (5) courses, with no more than one (1) of those in graduate level coursework.

Does repeating a course impact my financial aid?

We encourage students to review th Satisfactory Academic Progress website and consider speaking to a Financial Aid representative before repeating a course.
